   Publishers
There are about 300 publishers and printing houses operating today in Armenia. Individual authors publish their own works independently because literary publishing and printing is considered a free and independent enterprise. In post-Soviet space this is considered to be a breakthrough following decades of censorship, restriction on freedom of speech and Soviet-imposed control on what kind of literature was allowed to be published.
Out of the 300 companies, 50 are specialized in literary publishing – this is a fast growing industry in the country thanks to the efforts of the Ministry of Culture and its policies towards literary publishing; through state support and funding many books have been published in the Republic.
Publishing houses in Armenia are either universal or specialize in fields ranging from textbooks to music to cartography to children’s literature.
In recent years there has been positive progress in the printing and publishing of illustrated books. The same tendency is being registered with printing of encyclopedia and other scientific journals. Children’s books, which have a comparatively large circulation, are printed by almost all publishers.
During the independence period the tradition of translation of great literary masterpieces into Armenian continued and works by authors such as Faulkner, Camus, Kafka, Elliot, Nitzche and others were published.
Small, medium and large publishing houses print scientific journals and books, including those dealing with political science, history, law, music, architecture and medicine alongside universities and academic institutions.
National Association of Publishers (NAP)
The association was founded in 1998 and is composed of representatives and directors of 130 publishers, printing houses, bookstores and libraries operating in Armenia.
Since 1998 the National Association of Publishers (NAP) has participated in a variety of events, conferences and book fairs.
• NAP has participated in the Frankfurt International Book Fair for 11 consecutive years with its own pavilion. It has also participated in the Leipzig, Moscow, Washington, New York, Buenos Aires, Istanbul, Salonika, Tbilisi and Aleppo International Book Fairs.
• NAP has organized seminars, conducted research studies and other events dealing with copyright and intellectual property rights with the participation of international experts from Germany, the United Kingdom and the USA.
• A seminar and panel discussion was organized with the participation of the CIS and ten Eastern Europe countries. Experts in the field of literary publications took part, which resulted in the creation of a coalition, dedicated to developing the business culture of literary publications in the region.
• With the assistance of an expert in literary publishing from Germany, the publishing field in the Republic of Armenia was studied. This cooperation led to the drafting of proposed changes in legislation. The draft law was submitted to the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.
• With the support of the Ministry of Culture, NAP has published the quarterly journal "Publication and Sale of Armenian Books”. This publication includes research and study conducted about the demand market of the book industry in the country, topics related to the 500th anniversary of the first printed Armenian book, topics dedicated to Armenian publishers and an annual list of the year’s best books.
• NAP has published ten professional books dedicated to the literary publication market, copyright, intellectual property rights and the history of the book.
• Through NAP’s initiative, the four most important text standards in the sphere of publishing were translated and included in a number of volumes of the journal “Books of Armenia” and made available to the NAP members, authors, professors and university students.
• Over the past two years, NAP in association with HI, Armenia’s Public Television Station, has produced the series “Gratun” (House of Books) which spreads information on book, reading and on the hard field of book industry.
